SR2000 installation October 2016
Orbital Marine Power launched the full commercial scale SR2000 2MW, the world’s most powerful tidal turbine, at the European Marine Energy Centre in 2016.
Designed to DNV-GL standards with a 20 year design life, the SR2000 incorporates proven, commercialised components from other industries and major supply chain partners.
The large scale turbine, with 16m rotor diameter, can be installed in water depths of more than 25 metres due to the flexible mooring system and can be deployed with a range of anchoring systems to suit most seabed types.
All installation and maintenance operations during the SR2000 test programme has been delivered with low cost, locally based vessels proving the company's simplified commissioning and maintenance strategies at full scale.
Up until the project’s completion in September 2018, the SR2000 produced unrivalled performance whilst validating both the engineering and conceptual benefits of Orbital’s technology. During the demonstration programme the SR2000 has delivered multiple world-firsts including exporting over 3,250 MWh of electricity to the Orkney grid during a 12 month period – this was more power than the entire wave and tidal sector in Scotland had exported over the 12 years prior to the launch of the SR2000.
